Nitrile rubber (acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, NBR) structure because of cyano group exists, so the non-polar or weak polar mineral oil, animal and vegetable oils, liquid fuels and solvents have higher stability and aromatic solvent, ketone, ester and other polar substances on the swelling effect. The swelling property of NBR in solvent is related to the nature of solvent. The lower the aniline point of the solvent or the higher the aromatics content, the greater the swelling capacity, and the worse the NBR's stability in the solvent. In NBR, the dielectric properties are reduced because of the cyanide which is easily polarized by the electric field. NBR is a semiconductor rubber. The higher the amount of acrylonitrile, the worse the dielectric properties.

The heat resistance of NBR is better than that of natural rubber, styrene butadiene rubber and chloroprene rubber. Compared with other rubber, NBR has a wider temperature range, which can be used in air at 120 C for a long time. If the air is isolated, it can be used for 160 days. The heat resistance of NBR is increased with the amount of acrylonitrile combined with it.

The main disadvantages of NBR are the poor performance of ozone resistance and strong oxidizing agents. To this end, the anti ozonation agent is often added to the benzyl two amine and paraffin and antioxidant polyamine, polyphenol and organic phosphite.
